What's newTraining partnership adds value to power industryConnell Wagner and TAFE NSW – Western Institute have signed a Memorandum of Understanding which will see the two organisations work together to provide comprehensive training services to the power generation industry. Barry Finlay, Manager of Connell Wagner's Advanced Technology Centre said he was 'excited about the ability of Connell Wagner and TAFE NSW to combine forces to assist industry address the deepening skills crisis.' 'Our training strength will complement the more comprehensive training services offered by TAFE NSW,' Mr Finlay said. Located at the Advanced Technology Centre on the University of Newcastle campus, the Training Services Group provides a comprehensive range of training and education services to industry. 'We are very pleased to work in partnership with Connell Wagner to meet the training needs of the power industry,' said Mike Gibson, Director of Educational Delivery, Western Institute. 'Western Institute has had a long and successful record of providing operator level training in power generation plants which will ideally match the higher level engineering training provided by Connell Wagner.'
NECA announces Asia Pacific skills mapping projectThe National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA) has announced a project to map the skills and qualifications of electricians across up to eight Asia Pacific countries and Australia with a view to achieving the first-ever common regional electrical and communications qualifications. The project will seek to establish a mutually-recognised regional qualification for the industry for the first time, the aim of which is to create a business environment in which contractors can operate efficiently and effectively across borders knowing their skilled workers are appropriately qualified. It will focus on the two key qualifications in the Australian electrotechnology system – those of Systems Electrician and Telecommunications Cabler (linesman). New contractor laws for building industryTwo new statutes, the Independent Contractors Act 2006 and the Workplace Relations Legislation Amendment (Independent Contractors) Act 2006, came into effect on 1 March 2007. They provide a basis on which contracting arrangements can be distinguished from employment arrangements. They also consolidate unfair contracts laws that were being increasingly used to extend unfair dismissal-style provisions to commercial contracts. Events3rd Australian Regional Economies Conference (AREC) 3-4 May 2007, Port Macquarie AREC 2007 will tackle one of the hardest and often neglected issues in regional development - How do we grow local businesses?
